playing a game of three-card monty right now. you have the fed on one side, fiscal cliff in the middle, and i think earnings is actually where the coin is. that's where the prize is. i think the market is vulnerable because it reminds me of 2007. earnings struggled the second half of the year. against that, you have macro easing from the fed. going to the december 2007 meeting, you actually had them cut rates. and after that, the market had a real tough time. >> jim, what do you think about the three-card monty theory? >> i don't really think that earnings is the driving force. i think we've produced much of the earnings for the cycle. we're at new all time highs. the i think earnings will rise a little more. the big key driving force is rising ornaments. over 10% of the gain is because the earnings multiple goes to 13 1/2 now. that's 10% of the gain this year. and rising pes is all about rising confidence. i think, if we agree this is more of a sustainable recovery, then confidence will either continue to rise, and so will valuatio valuations. so we need to have some earnings, but the

, top thee, but also on the top three is what's happening with italian politics. of course, mario monti saying he was going to resign as italy's prime minister. that paves the way for flesh elections to be called in the beginning of next year. yesterday, we saw the negative reaction. sylvia berlusconi wants to make his return on the political scene. today, we saw a bounce back. if you can see see bind me, the bank stocks in italy rerebound, but it's only in the range of .5% to 1% of these names which were down in some cases nearly 10% yesterday. if you take a quick look at european bourses, if that's possible, down near the ftse mib, this is the one selling off somewhere in the range of 3.5% yesterday. today it's adding about .8%. in spain, showing a nice rebound. same attitude listing peripheral debt. we can take a look there. italy and spain seeing prices rise, yields falling to 4.75% and 5.75% respectively. is investor attention returning to spain? here is the thing. italy is the third biggest government debt market in the world. it's the third biggest economy in the eurozone. whatev

monti, has postponed his end of the year press conference. dow jones reporting that delay may signal a possible delay in the budget vote. now this budget vote, of course, being the key hurdle he wanted to get through before resigning. he announced his intention to resign in the last couple of days. that clearing the way for a potential return to politics of silvio berlusconi. again, not clear exactly why the post there has -- there's been a postponement of the end of the year press conference. that is the case as we are learning this morning. >>> moving on to shares in ubs which are at the top of the smi in zurich after the bank announced a settlement with u.s., u.k., and swiss regulators over its role in the libor fixing scandal. ubs will pay a total fine of $1.5 billion after admitting to manipulating the rate. as well as pleading guilty to charges of fraud and bribing brokers. the swiss bank says the fine will lead to a greater than expected fourth quarter loss. but that it will not need to raise new capital. carolyn, the response here by shares positive leading, in fact, the borc

an all-italian version of the european close right now, carl. mario monti, contrary to reports last week that he did not want to run for prime minister again, we now hear he's undecided, and may actually run for p.m. of the country. right now he serves technocratically. there's expected to be an election early next year, maybe in february or in march. he has told reporters that he's considering it. the cabinet member he spoke with earlier in the week said he's going to make an announcement sometime this week on television. when asked by reporters about his recent visit to the tomb of saint francis he said he did, indeed, pray there to help him make a decision about whether or not to run. a man eagerly awaiting monti's decision is silvio berlusconi, the former prime minister of italy. we're pretty sure he has not prayed at the tomb of st. francis lately. he has said that he devil wants to be run for prime minister again however at the same time he's also made noises that suggest that he wouldn't run if monti runs. that's not set in stone. we're going to see what happens there. what b

they have trained three dogs to drive cars. the dogs are named monty, jimmy and porter. for two months, they trained indoors on how to change gears, to brake, and to steer. finally, the trainers allowed the dogs to get behind the wheel of a real car. and they did it on live tv. with a little bit of help from the humans. the dogs were able to put the car in gear, operate the accelerator and start driving. they can even steer on command. the trainers say they simply created a series of instinctive behaviors for the dogs to learn. but it did take a while, they say, for the dogs to get an idea of what was actually happening. i'm not sure they ever did. but anyway, the project was sponsored by the spca in new zealand. they wanted to prove dogs can do anything. we don't suppose we'll see

now, if we did the full fiscal cliff, the full fiscal cliff monty, perhaps is the best way it put it, we get rid of more growth in the economy than in all of 2011. it would be a negative number, essentially, mandy. like 4.2% of gdp. we grew up 4% of 2011. a negative number. take away from that all things being equal. depending on what the private sector did. a negative for the economy. every dollar they don't do on the fiscal cliff, that's a dollar that does not come out of the economy. but i think it is probably reason to consider. talking about what brian was talking about at the top of the show here. 1%, maybe 1.5% drag on growth of anything decided from the fiscal cliff anyway. >> and it depends on what you buy. i hear what you're saying with, steve and it is important to dive in. when you get a dollar you probably spend more than the dollar, right? they have shown that. that is the greatest multiplier. let's be clear on what that is on. necessities, food, clothing, which is needed. and on taxes, and there is not a lot of sympathy, but if you are a boat maker, high-end home build

monty, kicked off on friday when he resigned. he then said on sunday he'd work with coalition partners. on monday he laid out what he'd like his agenda to be. today, he is negotiating with other potential allies. two big questions come out. one of, what will the clash with silvio berlusconi be? he said his economy was crippled and said the right would abolish property tax rises. the second more interesting question is whether or not monty in the game means the election result in february will be a less strong coalition to enact reform, which is clearly where we hope they will go as in keeping -- trying to keep the investor sentiment going. in rome, they actually auctioned 12 euros of bills. all the politics with berlusconi not really affecting the market. yields are low, confidence still in there. some italian banks rose on the back of that. not huge moves. you can see bpms, up 2.2%. in the center of europe where it was concentrated, other banks moved higher. i'll show you those, lloyds, in the netherlands. and one is a bank here. a tragedy really in spain. essentially 350,000
